Metro Roofing Newsletter — Issue 06

Midsummer issue, and the crews are drinking their body weight in electrolytes. Topic six: the attic, the forgotten room that decides your roof's fate and your August electric bill.

An attic should be close to the outdoor temperature. When it is fifty degrees hotter, shingles bake from below, ice dams form in winter, and your air conditioner files for overtime. The villains are usually blocked soffit vents, buried under new insulation by an enthusiastic weekend, and inadequate ridge venting, or the absence of both.

The fix is rarely dramatic: clear intake paths, calculate net free vent area properly, seal the bathroom fans dumping moist air into the attic, and insulate the hatch. We do this arithmetic on every replacement we quote, and we do it as a standalone service for homeowners whose roofs are young but whose attics are suffocating.

This issue's confession: our own office attic failed the test until last month. The office manager found the infrared camera report personally offensive. It is fixed now, and the second-floor meeting room has stopped being a sauna.

Check your attic on a hot afternoon. If it feels like a bakery, write to us. The newsletter mailbox doubles as a rescue line.
